About the School

Ball State’s steadfast belief in an education entrenched in creativity, values, and intellectual inquisitiveness started in the late 19th century, when Muncie business leaders envisaged a local college to assist in boosting the city’s growth.

Among the creative thinkers were the five Ball Brothers— William, Lucius, Frank, Edmund, and George—capitalists and philanthropists who relocated from New York to Muncie looking to grow their glass container business.

A small, private teacher training school started operations in 1899. After the community’s determinations to sustain the college nose-dived, the Ball brothers bought the land and buildings of the non-operational institution and bequeathed them to the State of Indiana. This gift turned out to be the Indiana State Normal School Eastern Division, which began operations in 1918 to satisfy Indiana’s requirement for more and better teachers.

In appreciation of the Ball family’s kindness, the Indiana General Assembly changed the institution’s name to Ball Teachers College in 1922 and then changed it again to Ball State Teachers College in 1929.

By the 1960s, the regional teachers college had started to attract faculty from beyond the Midwest, and scholars sought majors in fields like business, architecture, and other developing disciplines. Enlistment and funding increased with national trends, and new facilities and degree programs were added.

In 1965, the Indiana General Assembly changed the college’s name to Ball State University, recognizing its remarkable growth in enrollment and facilities, the assortment and quality of its educational programs and services, and the expectation of the broader role it would play in the state’s future.
